The distinctive aesthetics and exceptional combination of form and function used on the Cancer Center of Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida have earned Pensacola-based architects, Caldwell Associates Architects, Inc., an Excellence Award for Design from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Northwest Florida Chapter. Designed and built using curtain wall, storefront framing and entrances from Kawneer, the four-story, 95,430-square-foot facility (featured in the March 2010 KawneerConnections) is a leading, unique cancer facility for patients, their families, physicians and other healthcare professionals. The building features a distinguishing aluminum and glass egg-shaped structure and 70-foot high stairwell that not only joins the Cancer Center with other buildings on the campus, but also creates a symbol of the quality and compassion the Center brings to patients throughout Northwest Florida. It is this combination of exceptional design and purpose that have made the Cancer Center a widely recognizable building throughout the region.

To help create the building’s unique architectural components, Kawneer provided our popular 1600 Wall System®1 and IR 501 storefront framing system with insulating laminated 1-5/16-inch impact resistant glazing, which also provided added patient safety and security. Our 350 IR Entrances were used in the new Center, providing the extra strength where more stringent code requirements include windborne debris protection. The project was fabricated and glazed by Merritt Glass Company, also located in Pensacola.

The Design Awards program encourages excellence in architecture, helps elevate public consciousness of good design and recognizes those architects whose work enriches our built environment. Eligible projects include single buildings, groups of buildings, parks and plazas, historic preservations, additions, remodelings, adaptive re-use and interiors. The Award of Excellence is segregated into three categories: New Work, Renovations & Additions, and Historic Preservation & Restoration.
